Am I A Sheep In The Googlesphere?

October 12, 2007

There were some rather interesting posts and developments this week. Most of them were about Google. So instead of my normal “Internet marketing tips from the web” post, this post should be titled “Internet marketing tips from the Googlesphere”.

Hmmm… Did I just create a new term?

I will have to go “Yahoo” it… back in a sec.

Nope, Yahoo shows 999 results for Googlesphere, rats!

Anyway, the biggest news of the week across the blogosphere was that Google is lowering the pagerank of sites that sell text link advertising. I don’t know if this includes buying and selling banner links or not, but it should since banner ads normally don’t use the no-follow tag.

I think that those who made this decision at Google don’t understand how powerful the blogosphere really is, or they expect most bloggers to act like sheep and fully support Google.

Here are some of the many posts I have read this week about paid links causing websites to lose Google page rank:

Official: Selling Paid Links Can Hurt Your PageRank Or Rankings On Google (I read it here first)

Part Three – NoFollow is for Blog Spam…no Paid Text Links, wait…Paid Ads…Aww Heck, Just Stop Linking and Let Calacanis Decide the Rankings

Penalty Confirmed – But I Don’t Sell PageRank

Dancing With The Gevil – Defamed By Google?

Garry Conn and Google

How to Profit from Google’s War on Paid Links

Last, but not least, Aaron Wall pretty much takes the words out of my mouth on this topic:

Google is Becoming Wikipedia Without the Talk Page

So, what am I going to do about this issue?

I haven’t decided yet. On the one hand, I have come up with a plan that could REALLY tick off Google, on the other hand I can be a sheep. Decisions, decisions...

In other news…

Tiny start-up rival to Google?
A new company called Proximic has come up with a very cool new technology. From the sounds of things it might become a great way to monetize your site and be a huge competitor to Google’s Adsense. Microsoft, Yahoo, Google… let the bidding wars begin!

Lastly, I got an email from Google’s Adsense program last night about a new service that lets you make money from YouTube videos. I am very excited about the possibilities for some of my other blogs.

That’s it for now…

So Little Time

September 19, 2006

Last week I was ill and didn’t get much done with my online business.

Then on Friday I went to my wife’s family reunion at a State park in Oklahoma. We stayed in a cabin over the weekend and had a pretty good time. They had only one Internet connection at the Park. It was an ehternet jack at the Lodge. We stayed in cabins that didn’t have internet connections, so we weren’t on the net at all.

Now, that we are back in Houston I have something else that is going to be taking up most of my spare time. So, I won’t be working much at all on my business over the next two weeks.

What is interesting about all this?

Well, I have learned something very important from all of this. While it may seem unfortunate that I haven’t been able to spend much time on my business lately, it actually was a blessing in disguise. I learned an important lesson, that I plan on sharing later in the week. I am going to wait until later in the week to tell you, because in some ways I just hate to tell you what I learned.

Quick Recap of this business week September 1 2006

September 1, 2006

This week, I continued to go through the materials in a new Internet Marketing product I bought. I have read some Internet Marketing ebooks in just a few hours, but this product is all audio and video and is taking a really long time to get through.

Also, this week our Adsense revenue has been picking up. It’s partly because the summer is coming to an end and partly because I have spent some extra time writing about the show Rockstar Supernova on our tv blog. I took the time to tag the posts for Technorati, which seems to be bringing in some extra traffic. I also spent a little more time commenting on other people’s blogs this week. That always heps traffic and sometimes helps build online relationships.

I spent a little bit of time thinking about the vision for our business.

I have a lot of other things going on, so I didn’t do much else this week.

That’s it for this week’s quick recap…

Week in Review August 25th 2006

August 25, 2006

This week, I came up with a short term plan for my business. I have been working very hard at my 9-5 job, which has left less time than usual to spend on my online business. This happens sometimes.

I am also spending some time reviewing an Internet Marketing product, and I plan on writing a review for it in a couple of weeks. The problem is that there is so much material to go through, so it is taking a very long time to go through all of it. On the upside it’s been really, really, good material so far.

I have a bunch of posts in the “draft” state for this blog, because I have a bunch of ideas for posts, but have not had time this week to finish them.

Anyhow, that’s it for this week’s business update.

Weekly Update – Visions, Summer Olympics, Contests, and a Marketing Course

August 11, 2006

This week Jill and I spent some time working on our business plan and I redefined my monetary goals for our business.

Our homeschooling contest ended last night. We will be announcing a winner soon and I plan on discussing what I learned from running my first online contest.

I have not talked about it yet on this blog, but Mareike (our friend in Germany) is going to be interning for us in Beijing this summer. She is going over there to do some early reporting for our Summer Olympics blog. We are excited about that. This week we worked together on a prioritized list of things we would like her to accomplish while she is there. Mareike is majoring in Chinese and she spent a year in Beijing studying, so she knows the area and she has friends there. It will be fun for her and profitable all at the same time.

Also, early this week I received a full blown Internet Marketing course that costs almost a thousand dollars. It has 11 audio cds and 12 training video cds. I have gotten through some of the audio cds and I am very impressed so far. I am not sure how long it is going to take to get through all the materials. My guess is maybe 2 -3 weeks. It will depend on how much time I can dedicate to it. When I am finished I will write a review of the product. So far, so good.

I look forward to a busy week next week and hope you enjoy your weekend.

No Vision Yet – Business Update for First Week of August

August 3, 2006

This has been another very busy week outside of my business. So I didn’t get a lot of time to work on my business this week.

I am still working on creating a compelling vision for our business. I will let you know what we decide, once we make a decision about that. The one thing I do know is that I will be asking for help from other people whose strengths are different than ours.

Also, an affiliate manager for a fairly underground Internet Marketer contacted me last week, and I have been looking through their products. So far I am very impressed and will tell you more about them in the near future.

One last thing, our $500 dollar giveaway on our homeschooling wiki ends in a week (August 10th). So if you want to contribute or know of any homeschoolers who would be interested in contributing to the wiki and be entered into the drawing, please forward this on to them.

This coming Week and Last Week – Busy as a Bee

July 24, 2006

Last week was well, err… interesting.

The next several weeks will be pretty busy. For my business, I am re-evaluating my goals and business plans with my wife Jill. The biggest business thing that I have been most disappointed by is that I didn’t have much time to blog last week. I really like blogging (good to know before I finalize my business goals).

Anyway, the next several weeks for me will be interesting, because I don’t think I will be spending as much time as I would like to writing on my blogs. During the week, I am going to be in JBOSS classes all week, which means I will be putting in 10-11 hour days at my 9-5 job, because I won’t be checking my work emaill until night time.

That’s why I am sitting here Sunday night writing a few posts that will go out during the week (this one, I will set to go out Monday morning). I just won’t have the time to write much at all during the week. In fact, I might was well let you know now, that on Wednesday a new post will be coming out in my Ways to Make Money Online Series.

Anyway, I hope to find some time in the evening to finish making business plans with Jill, so that we can get our businesses headed in the right direction.

Ipods – Manifestos – Business Deals – July 14th Weekly Update

July 14, 2006

This past Monday (July 10) Jll and I celebrated our 8 year wedding anniversery. Jill surprised me with an IPOD. I love it, it is so cool!

I listened to part of Rick Schefren’s interview with Mike Filsame on my ipod on my way into work this morning. It’s a very interesting interview so far.

This week, my brother-in-law’s attempt at buying the sealing business went south. So it looks like the extreme sealers business might be on again. It’s a bit of a roller coast, not exactly the best start of a business I have been involved with.

I also worked on my wife and her friend’s baby site. I am preparing to move it to a new web host. Once I move it to the new web host, I will be redesigning it. After reading the Internet Manifesto I am starting to think we should just hire a different web designer to do the work of updating it. While I enjoy web design, I am not sure my time is best utilized desiging web sites.

Internet Manifesto – One word – AWESOME!

With my wedding anniversery, business discussions, my 9-5 job, my oldest son having science camp this week, and reading the Internet Manifesto, I have been very busy. Next week, I plan on re-organizing my business and coming up with new business goals. I also plan on putting more time into promoting our new homeschooling wiki.

That’s it for this week, hope everyone has an excellent weekend!
