How To Totally Fail At Affiliate Marketing

Written by George Manty  · August 24, 2009

Affiliate marketing is a powerful tool to make money online. I have been talking about it a lot (here and here) the last few weeks.

But what if success scares you and you want to fail miserably at affiliate marketing? How do you do that?

Here are some tips that will help you fail faster than the average joe šŸ˜‰

1. If Something Works Stop Doing It Immediately
If something works stop doing it immediately and try something else. This is one of the most obvious rules of bad affiliate marketing. Most people start out doing this, but if for some reason you are new to affiliate marketing and you find that you are making money with it, then STOP doing what is working. Otherwise you might have great success and ruin your chances of failing!

2. Only Promote Products You Hate
A product may be hot, but is it the right product for you? Contrary to popular belief, most affiliates have success when they are passionate about a product. The passion itself creates energy and drive, and these are the things that your potential customers will tune in to. So to ensure failure only pick products you either hate or at the very least ambivalent about promoting. Never promote products that you are passionate about if you want to fail!

3. Join Every Affiliate Program on The Face Of The Earth
Problems are bound to arise when you join too many affiliate programs at once. The more affiliate programs you join the easier it is for you to be pulled in multiple directions at once. Not being able to focus is an AWESOME way to fail at affiliate marketing or any business venture for that matter. No matter what you do, do NOT promote only one or two programs that pay large commissions. And absolutely don’t give those programs your undivided attention. If you can’t sign up for enough affiliate programs to keep you from focusing on promoting one or two programs, then your chances of making money with affiliate marketing actually might get too high and you (gasp) might not fail!

4. Don’t Do Your Research
Don’t research companies to see if they have good customer reviews and don’t find out if they pay affiliates. If you insist on researching affiliate programs be sure to search the internet for scams and affiliate programs that have lots of complaints from affiliates about not being paid for their efforts. That’s a great way to find a loser that will all but ensure failure!

5. Promote Products and Services You Know Nothing About
A common mistake that new affiliates often make is not being familiar with the product. This mistake almost guarantees your failure. So… NEVER BUY THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE YOU ARE GOING TO PROMOTE. If you do buy the product or service and you like it, then you CAN NOT promote it or you might make money! In order to be sure you are going to fail, only promote products you hate or that you have never used.

In summary, using these 5 methods should ensure you failure in affiliate marketing. What is your favorite method of failing? If you know of any other good methods for failing at affiliate marketing let me know in the comments below?

I have made a lot of money promoting products I don’t own as well. However, for promoting products long term you can make a lot MORE money. In other words instead of making $2,000 you might have made $10,000 promoting the product if you had personal experience with the product.

George, from my previous research and survey, I discovered up to 90 percent of the people love to download free e-books! In this case, we can offer free e-books as the “Appetizer”, then we can include our affiliate links in the free e-books that they’ve downloaded. In most of the time, we’ll have up to 50 percent of the new sign-ups!

George, thanks for the really helpful post. I know a lot of these ideas seem like no brainers but in the field of Internet marketing it’s very easy to get distracted by shiny things. Unfortunately I’m still looking for something that actually ‘works’. It seems like the only guys getting rich on this affiliate marketing thing are the elite super affiliates!

    Dear George,

I was just browsing online and your post is so relevant to what has happened to me to the other day. I was having this conversation with a ventor trying to explain that there is no way I could promote his product since I had no faith nor I found it to be ethical in what the product was suggesting.

Thank you George for giving emphasis to the research part of it as well, I might be very new to the industry of affiliate marketing but I like to beleive that at least I follow some good examples.

Your blog is an interesting read and you make it for people who have little knowledge about MLM very easy to understand.

I notice that we are very much into the same interests so I wanted to drop by and say hello. My name is Reginald & I am into this kind of business too. I also work for the Federal Govt but I look forward to retiring really soon.

The economy is really bad these days but unbeknownst to many, they can have financial stability thru MLM. Sadly, a lot of people think most MLMs are scams. If only they they’d open their eyes & try to understand MLM & its concepts better…I’m sure they’ll be on their way to financial freedom.

I hope more people will be educated about MLMs thru your blog.

I look forward to connecting with you and your readers.

Great points here. I can’t tell you how many times I failed while trying to make money online. I have a blog called Google Sniper, that almost had me quit the business all together when I was trying to set it up!

I think my biggest issue in Affiliate Marketing has been a combination of #1 and #3. Instead of scaling something that works well, I instead try to find new ways of making money with other programs. Then again, maybe it’s just me not wanting to put all the eggs in one basket by trying to deversify.

Don’t forget to try every single new method that you hear about! If you want to be successful, we would use a method that is proven to work. But we want to fail so, we need to try every new method that comes across our plate.

On top of that, we also need to give everything a half-effort and then give up; so we can blame the method itself, and not our laziness.

    Just trying to help.
