You just have to look around and be able to spot those gems and be able to modify and enhance them visually so you could at least give your own site its own unique look and feel even if you're using just a free theme. I want of course to purchase a theme for my blog but I hate to spend money for it. So, what I did was wrote my own theme for my blog. The result theme is not as beautiful compared to those designed by a well designer but I am contented with its performance.
