Facing Adversity

Written by Monika Mundell  · June 3, 2008

There are times in life when we have to face adversity. Annoyingly enough, this always happens at the worst times. Often this will spin us out of our neat circle of operation and flick us to the moon and back. At least it seems that way.

While there is no sure fire recipe for disaster, there are a few things we can do to stay reasonably calm without throwing a hissy fit (tantrum).

Business adversity could be anything from losing a long term client, to crashing our servers or even getting hacked. When things like that happen it is often very stressful for the “victim” and will put huge pressure onto him.

I think the best way to deal with any problem is to look at it objectively. When we cast emotions aside we will often see the real picture and stress without emotions is no longer stress.

Therefore we can relax a little and let off ourselves, instead of trying to push where there is no actual button to push.

Dropping emotions from the bigger picture will allow us to see what’s real. Now that we are tuned in to the real problem, we can go and design some mending tactics that will eliminate the problem altogether.

Establishing the culprit

To do this, we need to go back to where it all started and try to figure out why this happened to us. In the case of being hacked, it might have been that our site’s security was too lame. Crashing servers is normally an indication that it’s time to upgrade your hosting package and losing a client was probably (if we are totally honest with ourselves) our own fault.

Now that we know why adversity happened we can to the next step which is.

Dealing with the problem

The best way to deal with any problem is to tackle it head on. There is no reason to play around or bury yourself in procrastination misery. Because when we have a problem, we need to solve it fast as it won’t go away.

If it would (which some problems actually do) then most likely it isn’t really a real problem anyway.

I find that brainstorming helps to find usable solutions fast. Get a piece of paper and scribble ideas to tackle this issue head on in the least possible time. Soon enough you’ll see a neat plan of attack that can deal as a template for you to follow.

Before you know it, you have solved your problem and life goes on.

What next?

I wanted to add to this that we can often learn so much from adversity. There are always underlying messages we should embrace with our conscience. These messages could well be the key to a prosperous and successful life if we only listen to them.

What do you think?

Facing adversity is a tough thing. I am really so proud for those people who stand still and wear a big smile inspite of adversity.
