The 10 Best Ways To Increase Blog Traffic

Written by George Manty  · March 7, 2008

I wrote a list of 101 ways to get traffic to your blog a while back. I decided to narrow that list down to the ten best ways I have found to get traffic to my blogs.

The 10 Best Ways To Increase Blog Traffic:

  1. SEO
Without a doubt SEO has been my favorite way to get traffic to my blogs. The Google algorithm loves blogs, which makes SEO a very good way to get traffic to your blog.

  2. Commenting
Leaving comments on blogs in related niches is a great way to get new targeted traffic to your blog. It is also an excellent way to build relationships with other bloggers which leads me to number 3…

  3. Networking
Networking is possibly the single most important skill for making big money online. It is also a great way to build traffic to your blog.

  4. Word Of Mouth
Simply tell your friends and family about your blog and/or specific posts on your blog. You will be surprised by how much traffic that can generate.

  5. Linkbait
Create posts that are designed to grab people’s attention. Controversial posts are often associated with linkbait, but there are plenty of other ways to create linkbait. 101 lists make for good linkbait and so do posts that are out of the ordinary in some way.

  6. Link Out
Link liberally to other blogs in your posts. Many bloggers keep track of incoming links to their blog and will come check out your blog when you link to them. This can also help you get comments.

  7. Stumbleupon
I am a big fan of using stumbleupon for getting traffic to your blog. If you haven’t signed up for it you should. Stumbleupon is this blogs third best traffic source, behind retuning visitors, and Google.

  8. List Posts
I have found that posts with lists (like this one) generate more traffic to your blog. They tend to get bookmarked and voted on more on social sites. The more list posts you write the more traffic you will get.

  9. Blog Memes
Create a blog meme and tag other bloggers. Participating in blog memes has definitely increased my blog traffic. One blog meme in particular really helped this blog out and I never even participated in it.

  10. Quality Content
Quality content is the key to keep people coming back for more. If you write posts that people enjoy reading, they will come back regularly to read your posts. Having regular readers is a great way to increase blog traffic.

Those are the ten best ways I have found to get traffic to my blogs. What are your favorite ways to get traffic to your blog?

Great post… I think people should look at youtube for other ways to advertise their blogs. Placing your URL in a video watermark is an easy and fast way to get some targetted traffic.

Tip #11: Make a comment in an ultra high traffic blog post such as yours ūüėõ http://jmorrow50.wordpress.com. Now for my question, I see a lot custom blogs that have buttons at the end of every post to allow people to digg, stumble upon, or other services. How do you find the HTML code to allow people to do this for indiividual blog posts?

    cheers,

    Jarret

  11. George Manty on May 30th, 2008 1:45 pm

    Jarret,

There a lot of good plugins that do what you want. What I use is a service call addthis:

    http://www.addthis.com/

It is very easy to use.

What a great top 10 list. Its nice to get an opinion of traffic option rankings. Some of those are debatable, but SEO should most def be #1.

  16. Blooks LLC on June 26th, 2008 8:19 pm

Two other ways to increase your traffic:

    1) http://www.Morelikethis.cc – a free web2.0 traffic exchange widget. It finds pages that are similar and trades traffic back and forth between them.

    2) http://www.carnivalofmakingmoneyonline.com – If you’re a make money online blogger, it is a niche social news site with free backlinks, seo optimized categories, and shares up to 75% of revenue with submitters (plus 10% if you reffer someone).

  17. Peter Bruce on June 27th, 2008 2:49 pm

You could always pay for traffic and hope they besome repeat visitors.

  18. George Manty on June 27th, 2008 2:56 pm

    Peter,

That is one method worth trying.

  19. Nigerian Entrepreneur on July 2nd, 2008 2:40 am

I know this works because I have tried at least 8 out of the 10 listed and they worked. Nice post.

  20. Reverse Lookup on July 10th, 2008 9:50 am

Personally, I submit my site to Yahoo Directory and BOTW. This doesn’t not generate direct traffic…but it builds up my PR which in turn generates traffic.

Great post, I agree with a lot of the methods you talked about. I think the number 1 method however is quality content. I would also add forums to the list. When I started my politics blog, I used related forums to gain attention and traffic to my blog. It’s a great way to start the traffic flow.

  25. Fred Gq on December 29th, 2008 6:08 am

The only thing I don’t like is word-of-mouth. That can sometimes cause a spike in your adsense reports and may raise a flag. Other than that, the list looks great! Thanks!

I found this article to be very useful in my quest to get more traffic. I completely agree that networking and establishing backlinks is very imprtant for SEO and Page Rank. In addition, I have utilized StumbleUpon and found great success with it. Quality content above all else seems like the key to generating interest and traffic. If possible, could you drop by my site and let me know what you think (please be honest, I’m good at taking constructive criticism.)

    Thanks,

I have found that stumbleupon traffic come in short bursts… at least for me.
I would love to find out how to keep the same level ( or better yet increase) the traffic.

I have been trying to raise my blog traffic but to no avail. I will try to do the things that you are saying and we will see later on. Good work.

I have been trying to increase blog traffic lately but it is on and off. Someone click on the comment and then thats it. How do you go about to go more than that?

  30. James on March 4th, 2009 11:15 am

What are a few of the ways you like to Network to increase traffic? I have used stumbleupon a few times but unless you get a ton of people to stumble upon its hard to generate a decent about of traffic. high quality content is i think your best point. keep researching and share top information and you will be on your way.

  31. George Manty on March 5th, 2009 12:29 pm

Personally my favorite way to network is to comment on people’s blog and meet them on their turf. I have found it easiest to form online relationships through commenting regularly on other people’s blogs.

  32. Kai Lo on March 10th, 2009 6:49 pm

I think networking should be #1 on your list. Network with people who are better than you. They can guide you on how to improve your blog to increase traffic. Nothing beats knowing more people to network with.

SEO is number one, but implementing it is no such easy game.
