Objection Your Honour I was Looking For A Bargain

July 31, 2008

Bargain Hunters are all around us. They stand next to us in the supermarket, at the bus stop, in IKEA and they shop on eBay. If we are totally honest with ourselves, we all love a bargain.

After all, it makes financial sense to save money. Money saved while we shop will last a lot longer when we plan our next vacation. Therefore it is no wonder that the Internet is full of bargain hunters too.

You know, the get rich quick type stalker. They seek, stalk and pounce on their prey – or so they think – only to end up bankrupt, stripped of their money and in front of a judge if the worst fears become reality.

Did you know that by participating in a pyramid or unlawful business scheme you could end up paying thousands of dollars in court cases, let alone in funds for those who got cheated.

While the fast money might be tempting, it is hardly ever reality. Often those so called “bullet proof” opportunities are actually riddled with holes. Holes that will pull you down super fast if you are green enough to believe everything they force feed you.

Being ignorant or “blue eyed” doesn’t protect you from the law these days. This is why you can’t tell the police officer that you didn’t see the red light.

So what can you do to protect yourself against this eventuality? Well, for starters you can use common sense when you suss out a business opportunity.

If it sounds too god to be true, it is.

Also, before you enroll into any opportunity that offers unbelievable remuneration do the following:

  • visit Google and search for reviews on that company
  • ask to see proof from existing business owners within that company
  • get in touch with the company directly. If they are professional and willing to show you their goodwill before you join, they might be proper
  • ask other people in the same industry about feedback on the company
  • check with BBB (the better business bureau)
  • use your common sense and look for over used hype (a company that is good doesn’t need to use excessive hype)

To avoid ending up before a judge do your research first, before you join the wrong company. Many people get burned with these scams every year and millions are lost to them.

Being gullible won’t safe you from the judge. You need to be aware of these dangers when traveling the Internet.

In the end, bargains are great if they are obtained legally, without hurting anybody in the process.

What do you think? Have you been burned before?

Think Your Customer Support Doesn’t Matter?

July 30, 2008

Do you think that because you are selling something on a mini-site that your customer support doesn’t matter? If you do, you really need to correct that misunderstanding right now. I guarantee you that your customer support and desire to answer their inquiries will directly affect whether or not they buy from you again, and I’ll give you a recent offline example.

In the past few months, I spent a couple of thousand dollars with a company I won’t name, believing they could help me. In truth, it all started out quite well. Then, they sent me a false notice that they couldn’t continue with their service because I hadn’t done something I had, and it all started going downhill. Not good when it costs a customer thousands of dollars for you to perform that service.

Now granted, your product or subscription site probably isn’t going to cost someone thousands of dollars, unless you sell training programs. However, if you’re apathetic to customer emails, or your computer does something screwy and starts throwing out false panic attacks like the one I received from the company above, chances are you’re going to create negative publicity. That means you can forget things like referral sales or testimonials. In short, your customer service, however simple it may be, makes a difference.

Here are just a few tips on customer service:

  • If you get an email or other communication from a customer, answer it.

  • If you have a lot of different services/sales sites/subscription sites, set up a central ticket site ( is a good example of this), then point all the support links on all of your sites at that one site. Customers can fill out and track tickets, and you only have to go one place to support them.

  • Support your customers after they purchase from you.

  • Find out what your customers think after they sign up, buy, or leave. This will help improve your service and keep future customers happier.

It only take a little bit of bad to annoy a customer, and you’ve probably experienced it for yourself as a customer facing bad service. So don’t deliver it in your online business.

Video Learning Online Is The Clear Cut Winner

July 23, 2008

In my last poll, I asked the question:

What is your favorite way to learn new things?

Here are the full results of the poll:

Video (36%)
Doing it myself (30%)
Online Articles (15%)
Ebook (11%)
Audio (3%)
Other (4%)

Video Wins BIGTIME!

I was surprised by the results. I expected the results to be a bit more even, because I personally prefer to learn via audio. I love to grab mp3s, put them on my ipod, and learn that way. It’s a real convenient way for me to learn, without being tied down to a computer or TV. However, most of you preferred video learning to any other type of online learning.

I am definitely going to start using video more in my business. I joined Web Video University to learn more about producing quality videos. It’s a four week course and so far it looks pretty cool. I will do a full review when I get through all the lessons. You can click here to check out Web Video University for yourself.

Besides video being such a big winner, I was also surprised that “doing it yourself” got so many votes. I learn by doing also, but I was surprised by how many people chose that over the other methods.

Anyway, the bottom line is that if you are doing any online training (especially in the Internet marketing niche) you should definitely provide online video training to your customers.

YouTube and Your Web Site

July 20, 2008

My first thought about YouTube is that I visit it far too much.

It’s easy to get addicted. You can surf for hours through the home videos other people have made. Some of them are so good at it they even have subscribers. I can enjoy my favorites, leave comments, and otherwise spend far too much time there when I should be doing something else. So do a lot of other people, and this is where your web site comes into the picture.

You can make videos of your own and put them on YouTube. If they become popular, you can use them to drive traffic to your site. Now, while I’m not going to go into a dissertation on this, the basics are pretty simple.

  • Make a video. You’re promoting your own commercial interests when you drive traffic to your site with this video, so it should be original. Using other people’s clips, music, or artwork for commercial purposes without their permission is a giant no-no and can get you into trouble.
  • Put your site’s URL at the end of the video, then allow people to post or embed it on their own sites. You’ll get traffic from YouTube, but you could get more if someone uses it on their site if the link is in the video.
  • Plus, to drive traffic straight from YouTube, put your link in the comment section that comes with every video there.
  • This can result in a traffic spike, and if you have some means of traffic capture like RSS, opt-ins, sales, or subscription sign-ups, you can put that traffic to use.

Internet marketing is starting to trend towards video, so if you can make them, you can most use them. It’s worked for other people, for better and worse (i.e. “LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!”), so if you do make your own video, don’t wear raccoon mascara and have a nervous breakdown.

On the other hand, if raccoon mascara has worked for you in the past, feel free to comment. I’d really be interested in hearing about it.

How Long Have You Been Trying To Make Money Online?

July 17, 2008

I just put up a new poll, because I want to know how long you have been trying to make money online.

Take our latest poll below and let us know!

PS. I will talk about the results of our last poll pretty soon…

Knowledge is Only Half of Making Money Online

July 16, 2008

I’m a big fan of doing my homework, especially when it comes to making money online.

In fact, in the span of time I’ve been working online, I’ve done quite a bit of homework. I’ve bought ebooks on the topic. I’ve scanned through forums. I’ve searched for free information. Heck, I even went to the bookstore for references when I wanted to learn how to make my own sites. Yes, I probably bought too much, and sometimes I took a wrong turn, but looking back, the knowledge proved worthwhile.

However, it’s not enough. Knowledge of how to make money online isn’t all you need. If you actually want to make money online, you have to put that knowledge to use. That means taking action, and that’s the tough step most people don’t take. Whether or not its fear, or because they were deceived by the bulk rate spin surrounding most ‘make money online’ products and services, they simply won’t act.

That won’t do at all. Knowledge is great, but by itself, it’s nothing. Without action, learning what you need to do is merely a mental exercise, and doesn’t have much use. On the other hand, action without knowledge is an invitation to chaos. I’ve taken a couple of classes in the school of hard knocks doing that, and I don’t recommend it.

To make money online, you need both knowledge and the initiative to act. While I’m not a fan of ‘just act’, once you learn you must act. Simply learning how to make money online and then doing nothing with that knowledge won’t get you anywhere. Yes, you’ll probably have to learn some more along the way, but once you have an idea of how to begin, get to it.

What If You Can’t Find A Niche That You Are Passionate About?

July 14, 2008

Question Mark

In my previous posts on finding the right niche to market to I said that it is much easier to build a business by sticking with one niche market that you LOVE.

While this is true, this assumes that you can find something you are passionate about.

What if you can’t find a niche market that you are passionate about?

What if there is no money in the niche markets you enjoy the most?

I have not seen these questions answered by many people. The first time I saw this answered was when I was doing religious study, but I have also seen it answered by a few business people.

So, what is the answer?

First, let’s take a quick look back at my 7 step niche finding system:

1. Make A List Of Your Passions

2. Make A List Of Things You Do Well

3. Merge The First Two Lists

4. Choose Your Favorite 3-5 Niches

5. Determine The Traffic Potential

6. Determine The Money Making Potential

7. Make Sure You Have Time For The Niche

If none of the niches that you are passionate about look profitable, then skip step 1 (1. Make A List Of Your Passions). At the end you will have a list of niches that you are good at and that make money. If none of the niches that you are good at (or have knowledge about) are niches that you can make money in (which is possible, but unlikely), then you need to skip steps1-4. Which means all you are left doing is finding profitable niches (steps 5-7).

After completing steps 5 through 7 you now have a profitable niche to target. That’s what you do when you can’t find a good niche in areas that you are passionate about.

“What about the passion? Aren’t you going to have a problem staying in this niche if you don’t have passion for it?”

That is the million dollar question… and despite what I may have said in the past the million dollar answer is that you need to…

Love the niche that you choose! Be passionate about the niche you choose!

Loving what you do is a choice. You can choose to love any niche. This may go against many of the things you have heard in the past, but it is an extremely important principle to learn. This is so important I am going to repeat it in big bold letters:

“Loving what you do is a choice. You can choose to love any niche.”

You don’t have to be passionate about a niche to make money online. However, you need to become passionate about everything you do in that niche (marketing, writing about it, etc.). You need to be passionate about what you are doing to make it easier to stick with it long term. And that passion is a choice. You can choose to love what you are doing, or you can choose to hate it. The decision is yours. When you choose to love what you are doing, then you will be much more likely to create the online business of your dreams.
