Why Have a Web Site if You’re Doing Well Offline?

Written by Ryan Ambrose  · October 30, 2007

As I mentioned in my last post, it’s advantageous to have a web site even if you run an offline business that’s just local in scope. The biggest reason is because it gives your business a sense of legitimacy in the business world of the twenty-first century. If you don’t have a site, you look like a second-rate business in the eyes of many even if you’re not.

But besides the fact you’ll be behind the curve if you don’t have a web page, having your own site can also help you because:

  • You can brand your business and make it convenient for your existing customers to see testimonials, business hours, and product or service selections. You don’t even have to do anything special to get the word out about your web page address. URL’s can be put on business cards, signs, and stationary you already use just like your other contact information.

  • You can offer online options to your customers they can’t get offline. An example of this is an email newsletter (which takes no paper by the way) for your existing customers that inform them of your specials and limited time offers.

  • Show them related products and services that don’t compete with you, but go well with whatever you’re offering. These would be affiliate links that make you more money while pointing your customers at other things they may find valuable. An example would be party supplies and entertainment links on a catering site.

This is just what you can do with the customers you already have. Next time, I’ll talk about how you can use a web site to expand the volume of your business.

Very true Ryan. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked up business hours for local businesses. Why should I risk showing up at a store that’s closed? It’s pretty annoying when businesses don’t have a website – you’re 100% right it’s very unprofessional these days.

And they’re not hard to get anymore either. You don’t have to spend thousands on them when you can buy templates or software to make simple but attractive pages.
