Unfortunately, I don’t have anyone in the SEO field that I trust 100 percent of the time. I always test what they say, especially when I haven’t had similar experiences.

The truth of the matter is that there are only handful of them doing their own intensive experiments and the rest are just repeating what others in the field are saying or what they WISH was the case.

Hey Jon,

I agree, there are a lot of scare tactics out there, the way I got through a lot of the haze being a once up and coming SEO kid of NZ was to stay the hell away from forums – that is where I found a lot of FUD and would be my advice to the noobs.

Could you suggest some big names in SEO that you take as gospel?

The only thing I’ll say about robots.txt is that I had to implement one just to put crawl delays on the search engines…they were trying to eat me alive. Every once in a while when I see the site bog down I’ll check my access logs and find some bot hitting a page sometimes once a second and I’ll either get it with a crawl delay or if it’s just flat out misbehaving I’ll deny it completely. That’s about all I use it for, though.

A simple but great SEO Tips. I agree, it is important that you know what do you want to rank for. Through Good keyword research and create great content out of those keywords, get links to other related sites, and also good on page optimization will get you higher on the search engines.

I agree that SEO isn’t quite as complicated as many people make it seem. I’ve noticed that if you gain genuine popularity… everything else seems to fall into place (must mean you have good content, you will/must have lots of links going to your website).
