I think there is a difference between taking a chance and optimizing offering the option of a larger adspot for your own ads. but if your site is huge you have the option of doing multiple things. It would be nice if these ad programs had the ability to embed them without listing their name. and make it look like it is something you down on your own as well. I think larger sites will have better ideas.

Interesting how he is trying to balance the time he spends blogging against other pursuits. It sounds like he has a good plan to funnel that money into other web properties also.

Craig,

I will consider it, but right now I really don't have much free time to do another blog that isn't going to pay my bills. I do wish your site the best of success and I will check it out.

There is nothing wrong with using third party advertising. But if you do choose to you need to recognize the fact that your advertisers are potentially being charged more and you are making less. John Chow mentions that his reason for using third party advertising is for building relationships. I think with a site as large as his, he is not serving his customers as best as he could. His advertisers have to pay more, he makes less, and then there is the middle man that is getting rich. I spoke in more detail about this on Kyle's Cove. Again, there is nothing wrong with using these services, but I strongly feel when your site gets as large as John Chow's, you need to go independent. It will make more money and cost less to the advertiser.

Garry,

I understand what you are saying and agree. I am not sure I agree with John Chow, because so many other people disagree with him on this. However, I just read his post and his reasoning is very sound. I don't really keep up with his blog, so thanks for the link to his post.

Hey George,

I don't dislike programs like Adsense, ReviewMe and Text-Link-Ads. I think they are great! But I think there comes a time in the growth of a site when the owner needs to consider launching their own campaign. What is great about offering forms of advertising on your site is that you can give the viewer many options. John Chow tells everyone to stay with these programs. I feel that if your site is very huge like Chow's you are at the point where you could better serve your customer by providing direct advertising.
