Big Changes Coming In 2008 For This Blog

December 30, 2007

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was going to be making changes in my business in 2008. One of the changes I have to make for the first few months of 2008 is to spend a lot less time on the Internet. I have quite a few off-line things to take care of and won’t be able to spend as much time online. That means I need to work much more efficiently, which I will talk about more in the future. There are also big changes coming in 2008 for this blog…

So what is going to change on this blog?

Here are two of the big changes you can expect in 2008:

  1. More Focus On Teaching
In 2008 I am going to provide you with more “how to” posts. I plan on providing a lot more information about how to make money online. I know that’s what you want, so that is what I am going to give you.

  2. New Theme
My web designer and I are working on a new theme for this blog. I am going to make the blog look more like a website and less like a blog. One of the things I don’t like about blogs is that it is often difficult to find what you are looking for. This is even true of very popular blogs.

There are other changes I will be making in 2008, but I am going to let those be a surprise.

Hope you all have a happy 2008!

PS. These changes are coming in the New Year but because of other obligations I have not placed a time line on the changes yet.

Contest And Sweepstakes Laws Around The World Are Complicated

December 21, 2007

Several people have asked me why our 500 dollar contest/giveaway was only for US citizens. Well, here’s the deal…

Contest And Sweepstakes Laws Are Complicated

It’s hard enough to comply with US laws regarding contests but having to comply with the laws of every country in the world is pretty close to impossible. US laws are fairly difficult to comply with. If you don’t believe me, just read this article on US contest law.

Big US Companies Don’t Even Try It

You would think the lawyers for big companies would be able to draft up contest/sweepstakes rules that would comply with international laws, but you would be wrong…

Most US based companies restrict their contests to the United States. Here are some of the things that US companies have said about this.

The Discovery Channel says:

Different rules and regulations associated with games of chance in other countries make it difficult to administer sweepstakes and games outside the United States.

StarTrek.com
says:

We certainly understand that Star Trek fandom is not limited by national boundaries. We know there are millions of fans around the world just in the United States and we regret not being able to allow everyone to participate in our giveaways.

In order for us to hold a giveaway or sweepstakes on our site we must comply with the legal requirements in every territory in which the contest is available (on the Web, this means virtually the entire planet). However, it is simply beyond the scope of our group to comply with contest laws around the world. Thus, our posted rules satisfy the requirements for U.S. participants only.

When Canada and other countries simplify their requirements for on-line contests, we will be able to allow our giveaways to cross international borders.

An Example Of The Difficulty Of Complying With Other Countries Laws

Read this story (and the comments). Essentially, in order to open a contest up to Canadian residents, Starbucks had to add the following clause to their contest rules:

If a resident of Canada is selected as a winner, they will be required to correctly answer, without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a timed, mathematical skill-testing question, to be administered by Marden- Kane, Inc. either by mail, telephone, e-mail, or fax (at its sole discretion) before the awarding of the prize.

The reason for this is that according to some Canadian law you can’t run a sweepstakes/contest that just gives away money (like our contest). In order to comply with Canadian law I would need to give the “winner” a test of skill. If I wanted to open the contest to every country imagine how difficult it would be to comply with ALL the contest laws around the world?

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that I don’t want to lose my business because of a sweepstakes or contest. I am very sorry for the inconvenience. I wish that international contest laws weren’t so complicated and I will try to find a way to reward all my readers in some other way.

My Thoughts On Rich Schefren’s Attention Age Doctrine 2

December 18, 2007

A few weeks ago I mentioned that Rich Schefren released the Attention Age Doctrine Part 2. Well, I forgot to talk about it after I read it. I just wanted to let you know that it is a really good read. Rich always manages to grab my attention with his writing and he did so with his latest book.

Now for my thoughts on the “Attention Age Doctrine Part 2“...

Quite frankly it reminded me a little bit of the free ebook that John Reese released last year (can’t really remember the name of it). It also reminded me of “The Purple Cow” by Seth Godin (a great book that everyone should read). The big difference is that Rich gives you actionable steps to grab people’s attention in the attention age. He also talks a lot about the impact of web 2.0 on the Internet. I think social bookmarking, blogging, etc. are all great and are making a huge impact on the net.

I don’t know if Rich feels this way or not, but I think that we are getting towards to the top of the curve on web 2.0 because everyone is adapting it and web 2.0 soon will be passe. Web 3.0 will hit us in the coming years and that’s where the money will be… but that’s just me thinking out loud…

All in all, the book is a really good read. It confirmed many of the things I have been working on and also confirmed why I need to make some more changes to my business in 2008. If you haven’t read the book yet, then you should click here to download it now.

Make Money with Scratchback

December 17, 2007

Guest post by Matthew Henrickson

With the big hand of google coming down on bloggers, there has been a void left for making money. Paid to blog services especially have received a lot of attention for google penalties. Scratchback has hit the make money scene just in time.

Scratchback is Perfect for Bloggers

Scratchback is a widget you place on your sidebar that is similar to a blogroll. In the widget advertisiers can pay to display their no follow link. You can select to have 5, 10, 15, or 20 spots.

There are different options on how long you want each link to run for as well as how much you want to charge.

Benefits for Advertisers

Even though the links are no follow (that don’t pass page rank) it can still be beneficial. Some bloggers charge as low as 1$ for a link. For a dollar you can definitely get your moneys worth if you can find a blog with traffic.

At Blog about your Blog we only charge 2$ for our top spots. Our blog gets about 400 unique hits per day. With only 5 other spots displayed you are sure to get bang for your buck, or two bucks.

Scratchback Features

Scratchback is still in beta, but has made strides in becoming even better. Scratchback currently pay out 90% of what you earn. On top of that the payouts are easy, via paypal. You can also purchase links the same way.

For bloggers with little traffic, they have also made it easier for them. They have just rolled out the Scratchback Directory, which makes it easier for advertisers to find you.

In about two or three weeks in using scratchback I’ve earned 17$ and that’s only on one blog.

Internet Marketing Tips From Around The Web 12/14/2007

December 14, 2007

I wasn’t able to do much reading this week, but a blog that I recently found has posted a really nice list of tips from around the web. I thought I would share it with you:

Terry Dean’s list of weekend links
I have known about Terry for a long time, but never bought any of his products. Maybe I will in the near future, since he really pushes the idea of not compromising your values. Anyway, this list looks like some really good reading, enjoy!

Hanukkah Ham Is A Good Example Of Not Knowing Your Market

December 13, 2007

Hannukah Ham

I saw this last weekend and I thought I should share it with you. For those who don’t know ham is not kosher and, therefore, forbidden to eat as food by religious Jews. “Hanukkah ham” is a great example of not knowing your market.

The person who took this picture (NancyKay Shapiro ) also made quite a splash last week. She was even featured in the national news. She is making the most of it and is selling “Hannukah ham” mugs on cafepress. You can check out her original blog post with her now famous photos by clicking here.

Big Changes In My Business Coming In 2008

December 13, 2007

In 2008, I am going to make some BIG changes in my online business. For whatever reason, I seriously don’t like making changes. However, I have known for at least 6 months that I need to change some things about my business in order to make big money online.

I have been wasting a lot of time on tasks that don’t help me make money online. I have also been wasting time on sites that I know won’t make me money online. All that is going to change in 2008.

In 2008 I am going to focus on doing the things that work for me and on doing the things that I enjoy.

The things I am good at that I also enjoy doing most online are:

  1. SEO
  2. Helping Others
  3. Building Traffic
  4. Networking
  5. Marketing

I need to concentrate on those things and not spend as much time on other things. You might have noticed that “producing content” was not on the list. Well, here’s the thing, I don’t like producing content just to produce content. It’s not my least favorite thing, but it’s not my favorite thing either.

The big changes that I need to make are obvious. I need to focus on those 5 strenghts I mentioned above. I will use outsourcing and partnerships to handle the other things that need to be done.

This means that I will spend more time writing about my 5 strengths above and I will let my co-authors talk more about other aspects of making money online. This should make for a more succesful 2008, both for me and for you.

The Secret Make Money Online Project Launch And The Next Phase

December 12, 2007

Our first phase of the secret project (Barter Genius) has been released and I would like to share with you some information about our plans for the second phase of this project. Originally, we planned on creating something much bigger than Barter Genius, but instead we decided to launch our idea in phases.

Here are the two main reasons for the change in plans:

1. Interest
Not everyone interested in barter will be interested in the next phase of the project and vice versa. Our market research showed us that we needed to create a barter site that encompassed more than just online business services (our original idea). That, combined with the fact that the next phase of this project would not necessarily be interesting to those interested in barter, meant that separating the project into two separate projects was the best way to go.

2. Time
We wanted to release a product this year. Combining the barter site with the second phase of this project would have taken WAY too long to accomplish. In fact, I don’t expect to have the second phase done until the second half of 2008.

There were other reasons for the change in plans, but those were the primary reasons for the change. We also don’t currently have an affiliate program for the barter site and didn’t do a major launch. The second phase WILL have an affiliate program and WILL have a bigger launch. There are a lot of reasons that went into those decisions, but I am not going to discuss those right now. However, those decisions are allowing me to test the effectiveness of running an online contest, which I will discuss when the contest is over.

Future Plans
As for the future of Barter Genius. My wife Jill is going to promote it to other markets that have a strong interest in barter. I am going work on some other projects (including a new blog design for this blog), and then early next year I will be getting back to work on phase 2 of this project.

What Is The Second Phase Of The Project
The second phase of the project is totally focused on the make money online niche. Here are some key points about it:

  1. It includes a system to make money online
  2. It will save you time
  3. It helps you utilize your strengths
  4. It will include an option for personalized training
  5. I can’t tell you anymore or I would give away the secret ūüėČ

Final Thoughts

I learned a lot through the process of launching this product. I may discuss that in the future, but in my next post I am going to discuss some of the big changes I am making in my business in 2008.

One final note, I just wanted to remind you that the contest to win 500 dollars is still open through the end of the year. Click here for details.

What You Must Remember About Making Money Online

December 11, 2007

Guest Post by Trent Brownrigg

In the beginning of your quest to make money online you will most likely find yourself more frustrated and lost than you ever have any other time in your life. You will spend all your spare time doing everything you can to start making money with very little results. You might even come to hate yourself for ever getting started, but you decide to try just a while longer.

Something you must remember about making money online is to…

...NEVER GIVE UP!

Why is that?

For most people trying to make money online there is a very steep curve and you should not expect yours to be any different. Your internet income will probably be very little or maybe even non-existent for many months, then it might increase slowly for a while. Then, seemingly out of nowhere it can take a sharp turn upward and continue to increase rapidly.

When it all comes together and all your hard work has finally paid off, the frustration you once felt will seem like nothing more than a bad dream.

That’s when it starts to get really exciting! You can now build on your experience and knowledge to find even more ways to make money. Your business will continue to grow and your income will increase. At this point you will probably be making enough money online to quit your day job.

It’s tough to start making money online; there is no doubt about that. However, most people give up without actually giving it a true effort.

In order to find success online you need to:

1) Always Keep Learning.
The internet changes so fast it’s almost impossible to keep up. What works today may not work tomorrow. You must keep learning.

2) Continue to Work Hard.
Just because you work for yourself does not mean you don’t have to work hard.

3) Develop Your Skills.
Keep ahead of the curve by continually developing your skills to make money online.

4) Ask Questions.
No matter how long you have been around there will always be things you don’t know. Don’t be afraid to ask.

5) Apply Your Knowledge.
There are countless people with all the knowledge they need to make money online but they don’t apply it. Knowing is only part of the battle. You have to take action as well.

Also, keep in mind that there is no such thing as a get rich quick opportunity! You must put in a lot of time and hard work to make money online. But it sure beats working for someone else, doesn’t it?

So, what was the one thing you must remember?

...NEVER GIVE UP!

It won’t be easy but you will get there. Many people fail only because they didn’t realize how close they were to success when they decided to give up. This will never happen to you if you keep at it!

Dedicated to your success,
Trent Brownrigg
