I Have Been Tagged – 5 Questions about the ONLINE YOUā€¦

November 10, 2007

Trent Brownrigg tagged me with a new meme called:

“5 Questions about the ONLINE YOU…” (which seems to have originated at Home with Heather).

I usually participate in memes when asked, because I find them a fun diversion from the norm. Here is a description of the meme from Trent:

First, you answer 5 questions about the ONLINE version of YOU

1. How long have you been blogging?
2. What inspired you to start a blog and who are your mentors?
3. Are you trying to make money online, or just doing it for fun?
4. Tell me 3 things you LOVE about being online.
5. Tell me 3 things you STRUGGLE with in the online world.

Then you “tag” several bloggers, including me, and ask that they join in and spread this meme on their own blogs. When finished you simply write a comment on this post with the link to your meme post so I can then read your responses to the questions.

Here are my answers:

1. How long have you been blogging?

I have been blogging since August 2004 (just over 3 years).

2. What inspired you to start a blog and who are your mentors?
I started writing on a blogspot blog that I made to see if I would enjoy blogging. I really enjoyed it, so I started other blogs for fun and profit. I should have concentrated on the fun and let the profit come, instead of focusing on the profit with some of them. I would call Darren Rowse, Yaro Starak, and Chris Garrett my primary blogging mentors. While I haven’t studied under them directly, I have learned a lot from their free information (especially Darren) over the years.

3. Are you trying to make money online, or just doing it for fun?
Both.

4. Tell me 3 things you LOVE about being online.
Just 3?

1. I love making new friends
2. I love learning new technologies
3. I love being able to hide behind a keyboard and express myself to a large audience without having to imagine people in their underwear šŸ˜‰

5. Tell me 3 things you STRUGGLE with in the online world.
1. Time – because I have a hard time dealing with all the information I like to read.
2. Focus – because I get easily distracted by a constant bombardment of information.
3. Being myself – because people aren’t exactly going to take someone from Atlantis seriously, are they? šŸ˜‰

Alright, I am going to tag some blogging friends (both old and new):

Court, Marco, Wendy, Amanda, Martin, and Malawika

If any of my blogging mentors want to join in you are tagged as well…

How Far Are You Willing To Go To Make Money Online?

November 7, 2007

Before you decide how you are going to make money online, you need to know how far you are willing to go to make money online.

What are your limits?

Until recently, I haven’t clearly defined how far I am willing to go to make money online. Sure, I have had some general guidelines, but over the years I have been asked to do some things that have been on the borderline of what I am personally comfortable doing.

From now on, before starting any online project I will ask myself:

“Is this method of making money something I feel comfortable sharing with my children, my friends, my family, and others?”

If I am embarrassed to tell my kids what I do to make money online, then I am not going to do it. For me that rules out a lot of things (splogs, some affiliate marketing strategies, gambling, prescription drugs, p@rn, etc.). However, there are a lot of ways of making money online that it doesn’t rule out.

How far would you be willing to go to make money online?

If you knew you could make a really good living, by setting up black hat SEO sites, would you?

What about p@rn? If you were guaranteed to make a million dollars, would you set up a p@rn site?

What about “burn” sites? Would you be willing to tell someone they will win a free ipod if they just follow five easy steps… The first four are easy steps that put money in your pocket through CPA (Cost Per Action) affiliate marketing and the last “action” is purchasing a new car through your affiliate link that pays for the ipod and then some?

I have learned a lot of ways to make money online, but a lot of those ways I am not comfortable with. You need to set your limits up front, otherwise you might wind up creating an online business that you regret.

If You Have Offline Inventory, Why Stop at Offline Sales?

November 6, 2007

Do you sell things offline? Then why not sell them online? Online stores aren’t that difficult or expensive to create, and can mean a big boost in your volume. So if you do have a business where online sales are a possibility, consider the benefits.

  • You can create an online store with scripts like shopping carts and secure payment collection that are readily available from services on the Net. Add that to the fact that digital pictures of your products are easy to take with a digital camera and you can buy web site templates or site building software like XSitePro, and you have most of what you require to start constructing an online store right off the shelf. You don’t even need your own server to host it.

  • Customers pay the shipping, so find a desirable service area to which you can comfortably ship. This will probably be your home country or part of it, such as the continental USA for example. This makes anyone within your shipping area a potential customer, which expands your potential volume greatly.

  • How else do you get the extra volume? You host and advertise an affiliate program which recruits affiliate marketers. These freelance promoters will give you exposure and sales in exchange for commissions, and you don’t have to do anything but support a good affiliate program and reliably pay them.

  • Even if your extra volume becomes huge, you can just outsource it to a fulfillment center. This means you won’t have to hire more employees and deal with employment law. You can just contract your new volume to the fulfillment service and let them deal with the rest.

  • You don’t have to be the next online mega-mall. Even if your selection is just a few items, it would make sense to have an online store. In addition, you can use that store to collect a list for customer newsletters, advertise specials, and point people at related but non-competitive products and make money with your affiliate links.

  • Your customers can shop with you even when your offline store is closed. That means you could very well wake up and find you’ve made sales as you slept.

It makes a lot of sense to start an online store if you’re a small or home-based business selling offline. The costs are low for the benefits of extended volume and the addition of virtual 24/7 shopping. If you’re not doing it already, you should definitely consider it.

It has been a while since I asked you what you want to learn about making money online. So, here’s your chance to let me know.

Dear Google, Bite Me!

November 2, 2007

I found this funny conversation about the whole Google paid link war (via Andy Beard), and thought I would share it with you:

Composing the Perfect Letter of Surrender

What was even more funny to me is that the conversation sounded similar to the conversation I had with my wife about this topic last week. Which makes me wonder, “Are women less scared of Google than men?”

Anyway, I have to agree with both my wife and Jennifer who said:

Dear Google, bite me!

That about sums it up for me.

Now, it’s time for me to get back to being a sheep in the Googlesphere...

The Perfect Way To Make Money Online!

November 1, 2007

I have a secret… it’s the perfect way to make money online….

Are you interested?

I will tell you “The Perfect Way To Make Money Online” for the unbelievable rock bottom, guaranteed, low price of 10,000 dollars (US)!

Ok… for you I will give it away for FREE (but just for you)! Remember this is worth 10,000 dollars and I am telling you this for free, so you owe me. šŸ˜‰

Here goes….

The perfect way to make money online is….

YOUR WAY!

You may have been told that the perfect way to make money is to start your own info-product business, or to start a blog, or to create 100s of affiliate sites, or to create membership sites, or to offer consulting, or to start an ecommerce site, or to sell on ebay, or to create one great website, or to use PPC marketing, etc. And they are all right, and all wrong…

I have met people who make a living online strictly through affiliate marketing. They have no products whatsoever and have been making a good living for a long time. I have met other people who create products, and make a living that way. I have met people who create 100s of sites and monetize them with Adsense and make money that way. I have met people who do click flipping and make money that way. I have met people who do online consulting and make their living that way. People make money all kinds of ways on the Internet and there is no “BEST” business model for making money, but…

There is a way to make money online that is best for you!

All of us have different strengths, different passions, different personality types. We all have different “callings”. We are not all clones! Don’t be fooled into thinking that this person’s system or that person’s system is the best way to make money online for you. It might be, but it isn’t the right system for you if it doesn’t fit your goals, your likes and dislikes, your strengths, your personality type, etc.

One other thing about making money online “Your Way”...

You May Not Be Meant To Make Money Online

Oh, wait a second…

That’s blasphemey… everybody should and can making a living online, right?

WRONG!

Not everybody is suited for running a successful online business. Some of you are better suited to make money with Real Estate, some with the stock market, some with futures trading and, perish the thought, but many of us are meant to make money in non-business related industries (actors, athletes, artists…). Sure you can make money online in these niches, but you don’t have to if it doesn’t suit your personality.

However, if you are well-suited for making money online and you want to make money online then the perfect way to make money online is YOUR WAY! Not your friend’s way, not the blogger who tells you that their way is the best way ever, not the guru that tells you he/she has the perfect system to make money online…

The best way to make money online is

YOUR WAY!
