Internet Marketing Tips From The Web 11/30/2007

November 30, 2007

It’s been a few weeks since I have done a post like this. I have been swamped trying to balance family life, work, business, etc. Anyway, these are some of the more interesting posts I read this week:

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know
I started realizing this at the end of last year. The more quality connections you make in your niche, the easier it is to succeed. I have made some real quality connections over the past year, and I am very glad I did. Not only because of how it can help my business, but also because I have met some really good people in the process.

Are You Using the Right Content Development Strategy for Your Website?
This is an excellent post about developing content that grabs people’s attention. Maki has done a great job of that and it’s one of the main reasons he has had such phenomenal success in a short period of time.

Read it Later Firefox Plugin
Chris wrote about an excellent new plug-in for firefox. It is something that will come in handy.

Best 101 Lists
Very interesting list of 101 lists. She included my 101 FREE Ways To Increase Your Blog Traffic. It must have taken a long time to get through them all.

Lastly, I wanted to mention a very interesting post from Wendy.

The Home Business Industry Needs to Realize it’s Not 1999 Anymore
Wendy’s article really made me think. I am not on the same page as Wendy because I am not getting rid of my Adsense ads. However, I am considering it. Does having adsense on your site, imply that you endorse the products that are listed in the ad units? I don’t think so, but do my visitors?

I do agree with her and I only promote affiliates products that I believe will really help. What do you think, do you agree with her?

Anyway, that’s it for now…

The Easiest Way to Make Money Online for Free

November 26, 2007

Guest Post by Trent Brownrigg

Important Update:
It appears that this method of making money with ebay might be against the Terms of Service of eBay’s affiliate program. From, what I recall you are not supposed to use spam to promote affiliates in the CB TOS and this process could be considered spamming. The post was also written several years ago so the method may be outdated by now and no longer work.

I am about to show you an incredibly simple way to make money online. Ok I admit that it might not be the absolute “easiest” way to make money online as the title suggests, but it is pretty darn easy. And it’s completely free!

This is actually part of a chapter out of my “Craigslist Profits Guide” that I wrote earlier this year. It has sold hundreds of copies and I’ve gotten many rave reviews from it, so you can be sure this is something that does work.

Before you can use this method, there are a couple quick steps you need to take…

1) The first thing you need to do is sign up for the eBay Affiliate Program if you are not already an affiliate. It’s very easy to do and it’s free.

2) The eBay affiliate program is run through Commission Junction, so after you sign up you will be sent an email from them. It will contain your log-in information and there will also be a form attached to the email that you MUST mail or fax to them. DO NOT forget this part because it is required. More details will be in the email.

You will also be sent an email welcoming you to eBay. Save that email because it gives you some links and information you will find useful.

Once you have done the two steps above, here is how you can easily make some extra money…

Go to Craigslist.org and find the “wanted” ads. They are under the “for sale” section in the middle of the page. You can do this in your area or any other city/state you want.

Once you are in the wanted section you will see all sorts of different ads that people have put up looking for various items. Just about all of the items people are looking for can be found on eBay.

So all you have to do is go to eBay and use their search function to find the item. Then reply to the Craigslist ads telling them you have found the item they are looking for and give them your affiliate link to the listing on eBay.

Are you confused yet? Don’t be, it’s easy! And I’ll make it even easier for you…

Here are the step-by-step instructions for doing this:

1) If you have done what I said above, you are now in the Craigslist “wanted” section and are looking at a bunch of ads that people have put up wanting various items.

2) Click on and ad that you think would be easy to find on eBay and can be shipped easily. For example, the ad title might be, “Wanted – Apple iPod” and when you click on it the ad says that person wants an iPod with at least 20 GB storage and they might list some other minimum requirements.

3) Go to eBay and use the search feature to find the item they want. Or if you know what category the item would be in, you can just go directly to it.

4) If the item is something like an iPod that can be shipped easily then you can use listings from anywhere. But if it’s an item that can’t easily be shipped (such as a car) then you will want to narrow the listings to the area the person who placed the ad is in.

To do this just look on the left column of the eBay listings. You will see some “search options” and under it them is “location”. You can then narrow the search to items within a certain number of miles of their location.

5) You will now see all the eBay listings for the item you just searched for.

6) Create your affiliate link. Open a new window in your browser and go to eBay’s Flexible Destination Tool. Follow their simple instructions to create your link to the search listings you found in step five.

7) Go back to the Craigslist ad from step two and reply to it. Send them a fairly short email letting them know you found X number of the items they are looking for and they are all within X amount of miles of their location (if applicable). Be sure to include your affiliate link to the eBay listings so you get credit if they buy one.

That’s it! You’re done. How easy is that?

I’ve used this money making method quite a few times and it works very well. I’ve also had a lot of positive feedback from others who have tried it. Of course, most people will not buy but some of them do and that’s where you make money.

I haven’t ever had anyone complain about me emailing them either. They are usually more than happy to get your email because you are doing nothing but helping them find something they have already said they are looking for.

Remember you can do this in any city because you aren’t actually putting up a listing. It’s not something that has to be limited to your own area, so you can find a virtually unlimited number of wanted ads.

There you have it. A very easy way to make money online without spending a single penny. You won’t get rich doing this but you can definitely earn some extra cash.

Your Offline Skills Make Great Ebooks

November 19, 2007

Have an offline business? Then you have knowledge and skills that someone else would pay to know. And an ebook is an excellent way to get someone to pay you for them. Even if you don’t want to take your business online (or can’t), it doesn’t mean you can’t create ebooks, training packages, or other materials you can sell online. These spin-offs can help you increase your income with comparatively less overhead and expense than your offline efforts currently cost you.

What can you sell with an ebook?

  • Traditional text: It still sells well, especially when you pair it up with useful and interesting illustrations that help make your point.

  • Videos: These are growing in popularity. Instead of just writing an ebook, you can make videos that your customers can download or watch over the Net. But, if you want a video product, produce it to a higher quality than you find on YouTube. People are paying you for it after all.

  • Audio: You can make audio training you can listen to over the Internet. However, if your skills are best taught with some demonstration, use video instead.

You already know what you know, so why not make extra money from it? Even if you don’t want to sell proprietary information that could rob you of a competitive advantage, there’s still plenty of market for the basics. So if you want to add to your bottom line, consider spinning off a profitable training product.

Seriously, how do you make a beautiful, sellable ebook? Find your answers today with The Ebook Walkthrough!

How To Start Your Online Business On Solid Ground

November 14, 2007

In my last post, I discussed what I think about the “Do Not Track” list and how it might affect the web. Today, I will explain what I think you should do to ensure that ANY laws like this have a minimal impact on the money you make online.

Let’s just get straight to the point…

You Must Decide Who Your Target Customer Is And Build A Business For Them

You have to choose a target customer for your business and then provide them with what they want. That is the way to build a solid online business. If your business is customer based, instead of “idea based”, then you are much more likely to succeed long term.

The Biggest Mistake Most People Make When Starting An Online Business

Most people start their online businesses by creating a product or service to build their business around. They get a really cool idea and let their idea run their business. What happens is that they sell the product or service to anyone who will buy it. Or in the case of a website with Adsense, they don’t care who comes to the site as long as they click on the Adsense ads. Right?

The big problem with this is that it isn’t a sustainable business model. Building a business around a product or service is a mistake. What happens when some new product comes out that is cheaper or free? Or in the case of Adsense, what happens when your traffic goes somewhere else because someone else has created another informational site just like yours?

Your business goes Kaput!

You have probably heard people say that “conversation” is the new king on the web. But it’s not conversation that is king, it’s “relationships” (it always has been).

Relationships Are King On The Web

You need to have a customer focused business to succeed on the net. You need to choose your customer first. Then serve that customer (build a relationship). Give that customer what they want, whether it be software, ebooks, websites, etc… When you serve a customer base, you have a relationship-based business. That is the key to having long term success on the Internet. If affiliate marketing goes away and you are serving a particular customer base, it won’t matter. Just start building your own products to give them. Then make deals with other marketers to promote your products to their customers in exchange for promoting their products to your customers. You will still make money, it just won’t be through affiliate marketing.

PS. I learned this “secret” from quite a few good business people, but the first person I ever learned this from was Dan Lok (thanks Dan for changing the way I look at running an online business).

Is Affiliate Marketing At Death’s Door?

November 13, 2007

The other day Wendy asked me:

George – I’d be curious to hear what you think about affiliate marketing and the problems that are emerging with tracking commissions correctly. With the latest version of Spybot rendering affiliate links inactive and the calls for a “Do Not Track” list, do you think we’re looking at the beginning of the end, or will new technology save the day?

Basically, she wants to know:

Q. “Is affiliate marketing in trouble?”

A. Yes. If these laws pass it could be bad for affiliate marketing. With more and more spyware utilities being used to remove tracking cookies, tracking cookies are become less effective. All of this is bad news for affiliate marketing.

Q. “Will affiliate marketing die or will someone invent a technology to bypass the laws?”

A. Maybe. It depends on how the law defines “tracking”. There are ways to track clicks without using cookies, however if the law says you can’t track people in any way, shape or form then what you might find is online businesses re-incorporating in a foreign country not affected by the “do not track” list. A “do not track” list can’t be good for affiliate marketing (especially if you live in the US). It could go far enough to cause serious problems for affiliate marketers AND web users.

How Will The Do Not Track List Affect All Web Users?

If the “Do Not Track” list effectively ruins affiliate marketing, you will see the downfall of “FREE” content. In order to maintain a profit, companies will be forced to charge for some of their content. While some content will remain free because of money that advertisers might be willing to put into a site, I think you will see free content dwindle. As much as some people hate affiliate marketing, it is the reason there is so much free content on the web. Without affiliate marketing or a good alternative, content can’t possibly remain free.

What do I think will really happen?

I think too many big companies will be affected negatively for this law to ever pass. Big companies play a huge role in the voting habits of politicians and this law will negatively affect almost every company in the US with an online presence.

A “Do Not Track” list could also be technologically challenging. If you can track some people, but not others, how does that work? Who is the ultimate “gate keeper” of the “do not track” list, and how do websites access it? What constitutes tracking? What happens to websites who violate the list? What about sites outside the US? There are a lot of questions to answer before any law could be enacted.

I just don’t see it happening anytime soon. I could be wrong though.

What should you do if I am wrong?

I will explain what I think you should do to ensure that ANY laws like this have a minimal impact on your online business in my next post…

6 Steps to Get You Started Making Money Online

November 12, 2007

Guest Post by Trent Brownrigg

Have you been wanting to start making money online but aren’t sure how to get started? Or maybe you have been trying already but just can’t seem to get any money coming in? There are thousands of people in the same situation as you. Trust me, you can make money online if you go about it the right way. Below you will find six steps for getting started making money online and eventually build it into a full time income.

1) Figure Out Your “Why” – The most important step to making money online is not “how” to do it but “why” you want do it. Without defining your why, it’s hard to move on to your how. You must search within yourself to find out why you really want to make money online. Once you have found it, write it down and post it in places where you will see it many times per day. This will keep it in your head at all times and subconsciously help you strive towards it.

2) Write Down Your Plan – Before you get started making money online you will need a plan. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? How long do you plan it will take? What steps do you need to follow to ensure you can do it? How many hours can you put in each day? What is your budget for marketing and other costs? Think about these questions and other questions you might need to answer before you get started.

3) Decide on Your “How” – Now it’s time to figure out how you will make money online. There are many different options for you to choose from. A few of the more popular ones are: affiliate marketing, network marketing, niche marketing, creating and selling your own product, blogging, or doing an actual job online. Most of these actually fit well together so you will usually be doing more than one at a time. They are typically referred to collectively as “internet marketing.” There are plenty of other ways to make money online too, that is not all of them. Do some research on each method and find which one suits you the best, then start with it.

4) Start Your Education – Walking into an online business blindly without first educating yourself is just plain crazy! You need to at least know the basics of marketing and promoting online, as well as some information about the particular money making strategy you chose in step 3. This education is available to you for free all over the internet. Great places to start your education are internet marketing forums and money making blogs. You can also search on Google.

5) Take Action – It’s now time for you to get started on your business. It is very crucial to stay focused in this step. Make sure you don’t join every opportunity and try every money making idea you see just because it promises to be the next big thing. If you have done plenty of research and educated yourself on your “how” then you know you have already found a solid money making idea. Stick with what you started and put your full effort into it.

Remember, you are taking action here! Don’t sit back and wait for the money to roll in because it never will. You have to EARN the money. And don’t expect too much too fast; it takes time to build up a good online income.

6) Work, Work, Work and Never Give Up
– This is the best advice I was ever given and I think it’s one of the most important things I can tell you! No matter what anyone says, making a living online is not easy. You have to put in a lot of time and effort before you will see big financial gains. It’s all but guaranteed you will have failures, but you must get up from those failures and trudge on to find your successes!

There you have it, the six steps to making money online. Obviously, the above is a simplified version of what it truly takes. I can’t put everything in one post but those are the basics of what you need to do. I’m not going to lie to you, it won’t be easy. But it definitely can be done and YOU can do it!
