What is Squidoo?

Written by George Manty  · October 4, 2006

Yesterday, I wrote a brief post about my Squidoo homeschooling lens.

After writing the post, I had someone ask me:
“What is Squidoo?”.

Apparently, I didn’t do a good job of answering that question. So here is my brief definition of Squidoo:

Squidoo is kind of like a wiki, only when you create a page (called a lens) you are the only one who can edit it.

Then you split the profits from the money made by that page (lens). You can use it to create almost any kind of page. For instance, you could use it to create a business page advertisiing your business services, or a page on a particular topic like baby poop, or whatever topic you want to write about.

You can advertise and promote the page or just leave it alone and see if it gets natural traffic. Squidoo pays you every month for the money your pages make. You have the option to let all or a percentage of your earnings go to charity.

I also want to briefly mention that in the comments for my previous post, Seth Godin pointed out exactly how much Squiddo is growing (see details here).

It’s pretty impressive growth. Squidoo is definitely something to look into, even if you intend to use it only as another method of promoting your websites.

I love Squidoo – not only because it is easy to set up a “lens” but because it drives traffic and income. I have set up several Squidoo Lenses and each one drives a fair amount of traffic to my blog as well as my affiliate links.

If you are planning on making money online then I highly suggest you learn about Squidoo and create a lens or 10

George, I use my primary lens for targeted internet marketing, and I love Squidoo because you can really get a presence on the internet with your lenses – whatever the focus. But I do some really fun one’s too. I created one on the Original Star Trek Series for fans (like myself) and one on Mork and Mindy (more for me than anyone else).

I think what readers really need to know is that, basically, the lenses are just like creating web pages, except free, easier, and with many built-in perks. It’s especially nice to see a lens being created on Home Schooling. Recently I had my daughter home for a stretch due to illness and I had to look up lesson-oriented activities on the internet to keep her learning. Every little bit that’s out there helps. Thank you for the lens!
