Link Baiting Example

Written by George Manty  · July 31, 2006

One of the best ways to get traffic to a blog or website is with link baiting. Since link baiting has been explained before, I wasn’t planning on explaining it in detail here. To learn more about link baiting I have included links to good articles on it at the end of this post.

My definition of link baiting is writing content with the purpose of getting a lot of links to that content.

I recently came across a really good example of link baiting. Check out this post from Damien Wilson on mindglob.

Damien wrote a list of what he thought were the top 10 posts from Darren Rowse’s group writing project last week. He gave my post an honorable mention. What was great about that is that it stroked my ego and made me want to link out to this post. And even though I realize his post is link bait, I still wound up linking to it (in this post).

As an aside, there are several really good posts left out of Damien’s list, the most notable of which is probably Aaron Brazell’s post (go read it if you haven’t already).

That said, I decided to link out to Damien’s list, since I think it is a good example of creating link bait. In this case, he gave a list of what he thought were the top 10 entries to the group writing project. Then he linked out to honorable mentions. Lastly, he linked out to all the posts that he managed to read. Because of the way blogs work, what this did was notify all the people who he linked out to that he was linking to us. This way, we would know that he was linking to our post and that he either liked it a lot or didn’t include it in his top 10. If we disagree with his post, we might link to it and say why we disagree with it. If we agree with it, we might link to it and say why we agreed with it.

It is a classic example of link baiting and it worked!

Love the power of link love. šŸ˜†

Thanks for the linkage, and if you’re working on making cash online, I strongly suggest you check out Copyblogger. Great site, and it’s got an ebook you may find interesting (Viral Marketing).

Oh, and for the record, I’d like to say that linkbaiting is a good thing. It’s what the blogosphere is built on. šŸ™‚

I agree 100%. Link baiting is a great way to traffic, that’s why I mentioned your blog post.

I am subscribed to copybloggers RSS feed, but don’t visit it as much as I probably should. I will check out the book in my copious spare time. I get tons of offers to check out books, etc. and can’t get to all of them, otherwise I wouldn’t have time to do anything else. However, the book topic looks interesting, so I will try to give it read in the next couple of weeks.

    Thanks,
    George
