Why didn’t I post today?

October 31, 2006

Lately, I have been trying to post daily to this blog. So why didn’t I write a post today?

Well, because:

1. I am working on writing a series of posts for this blog and it is taking longer than I expected.
2. I am working a lot at my 9-5 job.
3. I am working on other business projects and quite frankly they have a higher priority than writing on this blog.
4. I didn’t have the time today to complete any of the posts that are sitting in my drafts folder (there is a lot of them).
5. Ummm, Errr…well actually I did write this post, so I guess this question is no longer valid.

What are some of the things that prevent you from spending as much time as you would like to working on your blog or website?

How can you fix that?

Those are questions you must answer to grow your business.

Yanik Silver is Selling His Car on Ebay – Need vs. Want

October 30, 2006

If you don’t subscribe to one of Yanik Silver’s newsletters (like the Underground Online Seminar) then you should go sign up now. Watching the way Yanik sell’s stuff in his newsletter is a great lesson in marketing.

Anyway, this morning in his newsletter he let everyone know that he is selling his car on ebay! After reading the ad for Yanik’s car I immediately wanted to bid on it. Sure, I don’t NEED a new car, but his ad made me WANT it.

Yanik is a great copywriter and you can learn a lot by reading the copy on his ebay ad. Click here to go check out the ad for his car.

My reaction to the ad just goes to show how important it is to market to people’s wants rather than their needs. Although, marketing to both a need and a want is what you would ideally like to do.

My Blog Design – Do I need more images? Do You?

October 26, 2006

In the comments for my recent post asking for comments
Easton Ellsworth said:

You show up a lot in my keyword search feeds.
I wanna see more images here! (I know, my blog needs more
images too!) I like your design. Great post idea here.

Interesting thought.

I do know that many other blogs use images more than I do on my blogs. I used to be concerned about breaking copyright laws, but now I have a better feel for “fair use” laws. So I am not as concerned about posting the occasional image or two in my blogs.

On the other hand, I really wonder how much images matter for keeping readers. I know images help when you are writing a “how to” tutorial type post, but otherwise I don’t know how much they matter.

As for liking the design… I plan on making over the design of this blog, because I really think a three column blog is the way to go. When I do make it over, I plan on incorporating more images into the design. I will probably either hire a blog designer or barter for their services. So if you are a blog designer who would like to make over this blog, feel free to contact me.

What do you think about images? Do you like blogs that use images better than blogs that don’t?

What have I been reading about success, entreprenuership, and leadership?

October 25, 2006

In my post asking you for questions, Michael Ellis of http://innofative.blogspot.com asked:

What are your favorite blogs? I enjoy reading about success,
entreprenuership, leadership, etc. It would be interesting to know what you
have been reading on the subject!

A few weeks ago I wrote about my favorite blogs in this post. It has probably changed a little bit since then, but I will wait a little while to write a new post about my favorite blogs since it is always changing.

As for the second question, I don’t tend to read paperback books often anymore, because I have vision problems and have a horrible time trying to read the small print. However, I do read things online and listen to podcasts. With that said, the last thing I read in this area was Rich Schefren’s Final Chapter. It had some really excellent information.

I also bought a charity Internet Marketing call from Yanik Silver where a wide variety of information was discussed including information on entrepenuership and leadership.

I don’t read as much about leadership and entreprenuership as I used to, because I am focused in on Internet Marketing and running a business right now. However, I have read many books on this topic in the past, including (but not limited to) books from Donald Trump, Anthony Robbins, Warren Buffet, Norman Vincent Peale, Stephen R. Covey, Ken Blanchard, etc.

Lastly, I have recently read a few articles on God’s will in business and glorifying God in business. It’s an issue that I personally have been thinking about a lot lately. Two of the articles that I found interesting (that I can still find) are this pdf, and this article.

Anyway, thank you very much for the questions. What have you been reading on these topics?

Did Yahoo Ban Squidoo?

October 24, 2006

I was just searching for Squidoo on Yahoo and it didn’t show up on the first two pages. So then I typed in the full url squidoo.com and tried searching for it. Same thing. Usually sites show up as the first result for their domain name unless they have been banned. Has Yahoo banned Squidoo?

Does anyone know?

Who are you? What do you want to know?

October 24, 2006

I am trying a little experiment here and I need your help.

When you see this post, I would like you to leave me a comment. Leave a comment about anything you want to. To help you out, here are some things you could ask/tell me:

Let me know who you are.
What you want to see on this blog.
Where you found this blog.
What websites you own.
What you do for a living.
What your favorite television show is.
What you think of the design and layout for this blog.
Your favorite blogs.
Where you live.
etc.

If you ask me a question and I answer it in a new post, I will include the URL to one of more of your sites in the post.

So, just go ahead and leave me a comment. It’s not hard, it doesn’t hurt, just do it!

PS. I will only post links to sites that are generally family friendly sites (ie. no gambling, rx, p*rn, etc.).

Link and Blog

October 23, 2006

The other day I came across this new free service designed to help bloggers promote each other’s sites. It looks like a great idea to me.

The service is called Link and Blog. To quote their site:

Link and Blog members with mutual interests contact one another with the understanding they share a common goal. Communication between blog owners inspires the creation of new posts and fresh content for their blogs. The blog owner links their post to the other person’s relevant blog, or a specific post permalink, either creating a one-way link, or a reciprocal link. The process becomes known as a “Link and Blog Challenge.

This sounds like a great way for bloggers to get more traffic and increase their links. It is similar to a blog carnival, but it seems to me like it could be a lot better.

When they open up, I will definitely try out their service.

Great Reading from this week – October 20th

October 20, 2006

Here is some great reading I found from around the net this week:

Make Something Happen NOW! (quick, and to the point excellent advice)

time the one thing we cant control (this has been very true for me lately)

Rich Schefren Final Chapter (awesome, free business changing ebook)

What skills are crucial to be a good SEO? (good discussion)

Performancing Partners Launch (cool news)

Citizendium – Wikipedia For Grownups. (interesting idea)

My 9-5 job has still been very busy, so I haven’t had much time for anything except for writing on a few blogs. However, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have learned so much from the past few weeks. It has been a good experience. I will write about the business lessons I have learned from the last several weeks, once more of my time frees up.

Rich Schrefren’s Final Chapter Take Two

October 19, 2006

I just finished reading Rich Schrefren’s final chapter and it is a really excellent read. I am interested in seeing what he comes out with to accompany this book.

One thing I did realize when reading the book…

I have heard much (actually all) of what he said before. In fact, pretty much everything Rich says in the Final Chapter of the Internet Manifesto is said in a different way in Dan Lok’s Instant Web Profits System.

That said, Rich’s latest ebook should help most newbies realize that there is more to running a super succesful business than just putting up a niche blog or website and hoping to make lots of money.

Update: Forgot the link to the book, click here to go get the book. It’s definitely worth the read.

Marketing Agencies Using Social Networking Sites

October 18, 2006

Just read this article the other day about marketing agencies for big companies starting to market using social networking sites like MySpace. It’s a pretty interesting read.

The other day I created my myspace page. I don’t know that I am going to do much with it, but it’s there.

I have noticed a lot of marketers like Yanik Silver (Underground Online Seminar), Jeff Walker (Product Launch Formula), Joel Comm (Instant Adsense Templates), and many others create myspace pages. I think as much as anything they are experimenting with the marketing aspect of social networking.

I can see how social networking sites can help you to build up a network of friends that could help you promote your products and services. So at some point I will probably experiment with them more.

PS. I just found out that even characters in tv shows have myspace pages.

I love getting website traffic

October 18, 2006

The other day I was thinking about my business and all the things I could do with them. I was thinking of offering new services, creating a product, etc. and I realized something…

I have not been doing the things that I know I need to do in order to make our websites succeed.

I love driving traffic to websites! It is one of my favorite things to do, yet I have spent very little time in this area in the last 3 months. What a big mistake that is!

I know what to do, I know how to do it, and yet I have not been doing it, because I keep getting sidetracked with new ideas, etc.

So, one of my primary goals through the end of the year is to drive more traffic to some of our sites.

I do have other things to do (business planning, some design work, etc), but driving more traffic to our sites is going to be a high priority weekly goal for me.

Are there any things in your business you know how to do, know you should be doing, but aren’t? If so, what are they and why aren’t you doing them?
