Taking Time to Analyze Business Direction

April 27, 2006

I am going to take some time next week to analyze the direction of my online business and make sure it falls in line with my main goals.

What are main goals for an online business?

1. Something that allows me to make a living without requiring too much time. For me that means an online business that long term only takes up 20-30 hours a week.

2. My idea of big money is $1000/day, so the business needs to make a thousand dollars a day or more.

3. Something my wife and I can work on together. That way if need be we could combine to work a 40-60 hour week between the two of us to meet goal number 1.

4. Something that I can teach my children to do.

5. Something that runs on autopilot as much as possible.

Anyway, I am going to analyze my current business model and see where things are heading. I think that the new business with Jill and her brother fits all of these criteria, which is one reason I am so excited about it. But I want to have more than one online business making enough money to support my family. Which may be a bit of a big goal, but it is my long term goal.

I think everyone should periodically assess the direction their business is going, so they don’t lose track of their primary goals and stay on course.

Your Online Business is at Stake

April 26, 2006

I just found this on Andy Wibbel’s blog. If you want to continue to have success making money online, or if you want to start making money online, you really need to follow Andy’s action plan:

1. Email your Representatives in the House and Senate. http://action.freepress.net/campaign/savethenet

2. Then, pick up the phone.

3. Call your representatives in the House and Senate. Not sure who they are? Go to http://house.gov/ and http://senate.gov/ and enter your ZIP code.

4. Say ‘I want to call in my support for the Markey Network Neutrality amendment sponsored by Rep. Ed Markey and I full support net neutrality. Thank you.’ They may ask for your ZIP code to ensure you are a constituent.

4. Tell your friends and colleagues.

You can read more by clicking here and checking out what Andy Wibbel says about it.

Storefront Web Design and Coffee

April 25, 2006

The next couple of weeks I will be designing the storefront for Jill and her brother’s business. I am using OSCommerce and making lots of changes to the php files. It seems to me like most people who want to open an online store, should probably get some design help from someone who has a little bit of web design experience. There is no way the OS Commerce template would work for us in it’s default state and while I can easily modify the templates, someone without programming experience might have difficulty with it.

Due to my prior experience with drop shipping I really never intended on building another online store. I prefer affiliate marketing or marketing my own product, but the product they are drop shipping is a fairly exclusive deal. It’s not something anyone could do, the only reason they are getting access to sell this product to a new market is because of the product owner’s relationship with my brother-in-law. Anyway, I am very excited about the product and the potential this business has.

On a completely different note, I read some good news this morning. A recent study showed that coffee consumption doesn’t appear to affect your heart’s health. Excellent news for all of us coffee drinkers out there…

What are Trackbacks?

April 24, 2006

Trackbacks can really help increase traffic to your blog. I will write a more detailed post on my free website promotion tips blog about using trackbacks to increase your blog traffic sometime in the future, but for now here is a short and sweet answer to the question:

What are Trackbacks?

When you link to a post on someone else’s blog that has trackbacks enabled, you can ping their blog with what is commonly referred to as a trackback.

After pinging their blog with the trackback, your blog post will be listed under the trackbacks for the blog post that you linked to (if the owner of the blog approves it). This can be very good for getting traffic from other blogs to your blog.

For a much more detailed explanation, I recommend looking at theIntroduction to trackbacks post on ProBlogger.

Quick and Easy Way to Make More Money with Google Adsense

April 21, 2006

So many people who get started using Google Adsense are not making nearly as much money as they could be. I have several tips for those of you out there who have a low CTR (click through rate), to help you increase both your click through rate and the amount of money you are making.

I have used these techniques to nearly triple our earnings from Adsense and I know of others who have done the same thing. So here are my Adsense tips:

First, visit Google’s heat map and ALWAYS keep it in mind when positioning your ads.

Second, you need to make the background color of your Adsense ads (both the link units and regular ads) the same as the background color of your site. You also need to remove the borders, by making them the same color as the background.

Third, I have found that the best performing Google Adsense ads are the 300×250 and the 336×280 ads rectangle ads. I have switched to using rectangle ads on most of my sites and find them to produce the best results.

Now, for the most important thing. Ads above the fold will perform best. Ads that are above the fold are ads that you don’t have to scroll down to see. You can see this on Google’s heat map.

All this being said, not everyone likes to position ads in the highest click through rate location, because they feel it doesn’t look good. Our visitors have never commented on it and we get plenty of comments on our blogs, plus lots of positive feedback, so it doesn’t seem to be a problem. Moving the ads from the bottom of the post to the top of the post nearly tripled our click through rate on the four blogs we have tested this on. So it was definitely worth it to us.

For an example of where we place our ads and how they blend in, here are two of our blogs one is three columns the other one is two columns:

http://www.naturalfamilynews.com/

We have tested placing Google Adsense ads below and above the posts, above performed way better! I have never found a better position for the ads, although many experts say the best place to put them is in the left sidebar.

After following the above advice, an online friend of ours saw her Adsense earning triple!

Hope this helps you as much as it has us!

American Inventor – How To Lose in Life

April 14, 2006

I have been watching the tv show American Inventor on ABC since it started. There is one thing that has really bothered me about some of the contestants and I decided this would be a great place to post my concern.

Many of the people auditioning for the show have given up a lot for their invention. They have spent tons of money, sold their house, etc. Which is ok up to a point. Certainly persistence is extremely important in achieving success. But…

Quite a few of them have mentioned giving up their family, getting a divorce, losing their spouses, children, friends, etc. for their “dream”. Quite frankly that is going too far. When you give up your marriage, your children, your relationships, you are making a HUGE mistake. You might make a great invention that way. And maybe you will make millions. But then who will you have to share the joy with?

It’s the easiest way to lose in life. It really saddened me to see people had gone that far, sometimes for things that were really quite frankly bad ideas.

Even when you aren’t going this far, I believe it is very important to not let your ambitions ruin your relationships with your wife, kids, family, and friends. It’s just not worth it.

Now sure, when you start up you may need to spend extra time to get things going, but eventually you have to work out a plan to use your time wisely, so that you have MORE time to spend with your family and friends. I think it is SOOOOO important to keep your business in perspective.

Lastly, take a break to smell the roses. The Earth will continue spinning even when your not busy trying to make big money online…

Lessons from Donald Trump

April 12, 2006

I just wanted to let you know that a couple of weeks ago we started up a blog on NBC’s hit tv show The Apprentice. Every week I talk about Donald Trump’s business lesson for the week. You can see all of my posts on his business lessons by going here.

I hope you enjoy them. I always enjoy his business lessons and watching the show reminds me of the things you need to do to succeed in any business. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy watching it so much.

The Next Few Weeks – Content Crazy

April 10, 2006

Well, last night I started work designing Jill and her brother’s new site. It is my first time using OSCommerce to do a storefront, so I have a little bit of a learning curve. It hasn’t been too bad so far.

That should keep me rather busy the next few weeks. My secondary goal business wise for the next few weeks is to focus on writing lots and lots of content on some of my highest profit blogs. I have decided to focus most of my effort on writing useful content and not worry much at all about getting links. I think that it will really help the traffic on the blogs that I do this with.

I will let you know how it goes.
