Google Adsense Tip – Keep your content targeted

January 11, 2006

Google Adsense is a GREAT way to make money online as an affiliate. I am very happy with it. However, you need to be careful what words you use in your content.

My wife’s Natural Family News blog, often contains adsense ads that don’t really match what her readers would be interested in. That’s because her blog sometimes contains keywords that don’t match her niche.

Even if your blog is focused on one main topic (like our new winter olympics blog) you will still occasionaly get unrelated ads. For example, a couple of days ago, my wife wrote an inspirational post that included the words “*mber *lert” (replace the * with an a). Well, needless to say she had many ads about m~ssing ch~ldren (replace the ~ with an i). Which is fine, but not what you would expect from a winter olympics blog.

Google did fix it, after I used section targeting. Section targeting allows you to tell Google’s Adsense code what is and is not important on a page. It may or may not be used to determine the Adsense ads that are displayed on the page, but I figure it couldn’t hurt. You can learn more about Adsense Targeting here.

You might wonder why I used ~ instead of the letters a and i, in my example. Well that is another way to prevent unwanted ads. But it isn’t ideal.

In my opinion, Google Adsense is the BEST affiliate advertising system around. I highly recommend you use it on your website if you are trying to make money online.

Just Joined the Affiliate Classroom

January 10, 2006

I joined the affiliate classroom last weekend and there is a lot of information to go through. I thought I would be able to join and do a quick review, but it is going to take a while to get through all the material.

I should be done by this weekend, so keep your eye out for my review early next week (maybe this weekend).

Post Frequently to your Blog

January 9, 2006

How frequently should you update your blog?

I have heard from other sources that it is best to post at least once a week to your blog and it is ideal to post two to three times a day to your blog.

My wife has been posting 2-4 times a day to our winter olympics blog and it has definitely made a difference.

If you are in blogging for the money, I suggest posting 1-4 times a day.

A good question to ask yourself is, “How often do you want people to visit your blog?”

If you want them to visit once a month, then post once a month. If you want them to visit once a week, then post once a week. If you want them to visit every day post once a day. If you want them to come back multiple times a day, then post multiple times a day.

My Birthday and Blogging

January 7, 2006

Today was my 39th birthday. I did not do much today, but I did get a new basketball for my birthday which is exactly what I wanted. I am happy about that.

I have been busy this week working on our new blog http://2006turinolympics.com.

Jill and I are just now getting serious about blogging. We both really enjoy blogging and it is fairly easy to monetize a blog. So we are starting up several new blogs over the next couple of months and I will keep you updated on how it goes. This means that over the next several months I will be talking a lot about blogging.

Don’t worry, I do plan on discussing other topics as well.

Tonight, I added a new Trivia Quiz to our Winter Olympics blog. I have spent most of the week tweaking the monetization of our new blog and looking at ways to get more traffic to it. While Jill is focusing on writing for our new Winter Olympic Blog.

We make a great team!

Work on Blogs

January 1, 2006

It has been an eventful week. We had to take one of our kids to the ER the other day for stitches. It was not a pleasant experience. You can read more about it here.

Anyway, my primary focus for the next month is on our new winter olympics blog. Today I added a new Winter Olympic Trivia quiz page to our blog.

I also spent some time investigating the best places to promote this blog and I spent some time submitting it to some of the sites on Robin Good’s list of directories and RSS sites.

Right now, I would love for you to go take our first Winter Olympics Trivia quiz. Then send it to EVERYONE you know. In fact, go ahead and tell everyone you know about our Winter Olympics blog. While you are at it, send them to this blog as well.

You can never have enough website traffic!

Later…
